Save MySQL
Look over to the left sidebar of this Blog. There is a new link there and here called Save MySQL. For those of you who already know what is going on, there need be no further explanation. Just go there and sign the petition if you haven’t already.
For the rest of you, I am going to give you an overview of the issue, along with my feelings on the issue and my fervent hope that you will step up and join us in the fight to Save MySQL.
HP Printer Hell
I’ve been thinking about getting a new printer for some time now. My printing needs are not very high and I have owned a workhorse of a printer for years. It was an HP 5L that lasted me well over 12 years. It stayed by my technical side through thick and thin years and dutifully spit out whatever copy I requested. It was getting old and had to be hand fed, but every time I turned it on, it blinked quickly and said, ” I’m ready to go!”
But a couple of weeks ago, Staples offered a printer sale I just could not pass up. I should have.
Music and Music
I am a great lover of good music. I like many different things from Classic Rogers and Hammerstein Musicals to John Denver Ballads. A while back, someone gave me a copy of “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.” I was thrilled because it is one of my favorite musicals. It is Howard Keel at his prime along with a supporting cast and Jane Powell singing like a Nightingale.
I ripped off the outer wrappings and put it in my computer CD Drive, cranked up the volume and sat back to listen. Wait! What is wrong here? This sounds nothing like the DVD. What did they do to this CD???
Technology and Cars
Trying to choose a car now is like trying to choose which electronics store you want to support. Shall we follow the GPS herd or just pick a vehicle with OnStar and hope that it will find us if we are lost and send help with electronic bread crumbs.
I went looking for a car for my senior citizen mother recently. I had a specific car in mind. One I would fit in. I’m a big guy and I wanted to find a fuel efficient car for not a lot of money. I live in a town where most dealerships are represented but all of them are shy on cars.
Here’s what I went through to make a buying decision.
Windows 7
Windows 7 is the buzz on the streets. Everyone is talking about it. Is it any good? Will it save us all from the VISTA fiasco? Do I want it? Is it safe?
My quick and simple answer is…..I don’t know.
I haven’t seen 7, don’t intend to buy 7, and will encourage anyone I see to be very careful if they are going to venture into 7 land.
Privacy and the Internet
If you think you have any privacy on the Internet, Dream On!
The other day I wanted to respond to an ad that someone locally had placed. It was an obscure ad with only a phone number listed for the business. It gave little or no detail about the business, so I used Google to see if I could find out more.
It’s amazing how the path of information kept growing far above and beyond what I originally intended to find out. Continue reading to see just where that path went.
Net Neutrality
Here’s the laymen’s version of what is becoming a hot topic among the Geeks and what may finally be solved by a combination of efforts from the FCC and Congress.
Since the beginning, the Internet has always been open turf. Anyone could provide content and everyone would get equal access to that content.
For a while now, the large telecommunications and cable companies who provide the technical “backbone” of the internet, have been fighting to try to restrict some of the content on their networks.
Talking Geek
I have found that a lot of people are bothered by computers, because of all the new terms you have to learn to function around a computer.
Bytes, Interface, Memory, CPU, Megahertz, Resolution, and Nanoseconds, just to name a few!
It can be mind boggling for anyone who is not technically oriented.
Here’s my attempt to make things a bit easier…..
Why do Computers Scare You?
I have been working in and around computers of one type or another since the 1970’s. Back then, our High School brought in one of the first Programmable Calculators. It’s language was not easy to use, but it did allow you to program the process of a whole calculation. The printout was the size of most calculator papers and could take several feet of tape to print out the instructions for the calculation.
My first exposure to what would be called a Personal Computer was the Osbourne 1 in the early 1980’s.I am a Genealogist and some of the people I knew in the hobby had these machines to take with them to libraries and research centers. It was a heavy and awkward machine, but it served the users for entering their notes.
Hello world!
Welcome to the Technology Moron Zone. I am still in the process of setting up this blog so it will be a few more days until there is something concrete here.
While I am not new to technology, this is my first blog, so I am still exploring all the options and settings.
Thanks for stopping by…….
